NFC technology in PPE: how it works

Anatomy of an NFC tag

NFC tags are miniaturized electronic circuits operating at the standardized frequency of 13.56 MHz. Their structure is surprisingly simple yet effective:

Antenna: a conductive circuit that receives and transmits signals Chip (die): the brain of the tag, soldered to the end of the antenna Dual memory: Non-modifiable flash memory: contains the unique, permanent UID (Unique ID) code Rewritable EEPROM memory: can hold custom, updatable data It is precisely this combination of elements that makes NFC tags perfect for PPE traceability.

Passive by nature: zero consumption, zero emissions

A fundamental characteristic of NFC tags is their passive nature. This means that:

They require no batteries or power of their own They activate only when brought close to a reader (smartphone) They emit no radiation when not in use The reader supplies the necessary energy through electromagnetic induction This characteristic makes them ideal for application on PPE: they do not interfere with protective functions, they need no maintenance and they last practically forever.
